BLABT and learning to swim

Learning to swim can seem like a big challenge. However, at Fit2Swim we break swimming down into more manageable steps by isolating the parts of the body that contribute to the overall swimming technique. Specifically:

  1. Body Position

  2. Legs

  3. Arms

  4. Breathing/Timing

Using this BLABT model, students learn to swim in a progressive style. We focus on one element at time and gradually integrate them into the overall swim stroke. This ensures a fundamental swim movement becomes deep-rooted and autonomous before adding a new skill.

For example: During the freestyle stroke, breathing to the side is very difficult if a person doesn’t maintain long legs and body, extended arms, and chin tucked into the chest. Fit2Swim Instructors ingrain these Body, Legs and Arms fundamentals before moving onto Breathing.

Every swim class level at Fit2Swim has BLABT skills that a student needs to attain before continuing to the next level. You can familiarise yourself with them in the Progress section of your Customer Portal. It is normal for a student to be in one swim class level for a number of terms as they become adept at all the skills. However, you can track their progress within the level as they move from “Developing” to “Refining” and finally “Proficient” for each BLABT skill.

Feel free to speak to a Fit2Swim Supervisor if you would like to better understand the BLABT model or how a specific student is progressing with their BLABT skills.
